Valley choir marks a century with a concert in…

September 14, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

The Ackerbourne Valley Choir will mark its hundredth year this month with a concert in the parish church, performing a programme that reaches back through every decade of the choir’s existence. Tickets for the evening sold out within a week of going on sale.

Founded in the years after the First World War by a group of valley villagers who met to sing in a barn, the choir has met almost without interruption ever since, pausing only for the second war and, briefly, for the pandemic.

A programme spanning a century

Rather than a single style, the anniversary concert will move through the choir’s own past:

Folk settings collected from valley villages in the 1920s
Wartime songs the choir sang on tour to nearby garrisons
Commissions written for the choir’s fiftieth and seventy-fifth years
A new piece setting words about the Ackerbourne itself

The choir has also digitised its earliest programmes and photographs, which will be displayed in the church porch for the run of the concert and afterwards deposited with the town archive.

Organisers say the hardest part has been keeping the guest list manageable, with former members writing in from across the country to say they hope to return for the occasion. A hundred years on, the barn that started it all is long gone, but the singing has outlasted it.

Corn Street loses its last independent bookshop after forty…

September 13, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

The independent bookshop that has traded from the middle of Corn Street for four decades will close its doors at the end of the month, its owners citing rising rents and the long, slow drift of shoppers to the retail park on the Ackerbourne road.

The shop has been more than a place to buy books. It hosted the town’s reading group, ran the schools’ summer challenge, and kept a shelf of local histories that could be found nowhere else.

A wider pattern on the high street

Its closure is the third independent trader to go from Corn Street in eighteen months. Business owners point to a familiar set of pressures:

Rents that have not fallen despite reduced footfall
Free parking at the retail park against paid bays in the centre
The cost of heating tall, old-fronted premises through winter
Online competition on the very titles that once drew people in

The town council has said it wants to see the unit filled quickly and will discuss a business rate relief scheme at its next meeting. Whether that comes in time to change the trajectory of Corn Street is another question.

For now, the shop is selling its stock at a discount, and a steady stream of long-standing customers has been coming in to say goodbye.

Planning row brews over five new homes at Barleyhill…

September 12, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

An application to build five houses on former grazing land at Barleyhill Farm has become the most contested planning matter to reach the Guildhall this year, with more than sixty objections lodged before the consultation window closed.

The site sits at the northern edge of the valley, where the fields rise toward the ridge. Supporters point to a genuine shortage of family homes in Wrenfield; objectors say the wrong site has been chosen for the right need.

Where the objections land

The written comments cluster around a handful of concerns:

Access onto the narrow Barleyhill lane, already tight for farm traffic
Surface water drainage on a slope that feeds the Ackerbourne
The loss of an open view from the ridge footpath
Pressure on a primary school already near capacity

The applicant argues the scheme includes a new drainage pond and a widened lane entrance, and that two of the homes would be offered at below-market rates for local buyers.

The planning committee is expected to hear the application next month. Given the volume of correspondence, officers have signalled it may be deferred for a site visit before any vote. The Post will publish the committee’s reasoning in full, whichever way it falls.

Wrenfield deserves a proper answer on the recreation ground

September 11, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

Two years ago the council promised the town a plan for the recreation ground. Two years on, we have had three consultations, a feasibility study, and a set of coloured maps, but no decision. The people of Wrenfield are owed better than this.

The rec is not a difficult idea. It is the open ground where the town has played football, walked dogs, and held its summer fair for as long as anyone can remember. What it needs is modest and well understood.

The case for getting on with it

The improvements residents keep asking for are not extravagant:

Drainage on the lower pitch, which floods every winter
A refurbished pavilion with working changing rooms
Safer lighting on the path to the car park
A play area that meets modern safety standards

None of this requires another survey. The costs are known, the demand is obvious, and the delay is beginning to look less like caution than avoidance.

We do not doubt the council’s good intentions. But intentions do not drain a pitch. The town has been patient; now it would like a date, a budget, and a spade in the ground. The Post will keep asking until it gets one.

The old maltings reopens as a workshop for the…

September 10, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

The brick maltings on Wharf Lane, empty since the last grain merchant closed, opened its doors this week as a shared workshop for artists and makers from across the Ackerbourne valley. A dozen studios are already occupied, with a small ceramics kiln and a print room shared between them.

The building had been on the town’s at-risk register for years. Its high windows and open floors, once suited to spreading and turning malt, have proved well matched to the light and space that craftspeople need.

Who has moved in

The first tenants cover a wide range of trades:

A furniture restorer working in reclaimed valley oak
Two potters sharing the ground-floor kiln
A bookbinder and a letterpress printer in the old drying room
A weaver whose loom came up the river by narrowboat

The workshop plans to open to visitors on the last Saturday of each month, with demonstrations and a stall selling seconds and offcuts. Organisers hope the maltings can become a fixture on the town’s cultural calendar rather than a one-season novelty.

For a building that spent a decade behind boarded windows, it is a considerable turn of fortune, and a reminder that Wrenfield’s industrial bones can still be put to use.

Wrenfield Grammar’s rowers take the county final on home…

September 9, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

The senior four from Wrenfield Grammar won the county rowing championship on Saturday, holding their nerve through a tense final 200 metres to take the title on their home stretch of the Ackerbourne for the first time since 2017.

A crowd lined both banks from Miller’s Weir down to the finish below the road bridge, ringing bells and banging on the railings as the crews came into view. The Wrenfield boat led from the halfway mark but never by more than a length.

A season built on early mornings

The result caps a season the crew described as brutal in its preparation. They have trained before school through the dark half of the year, launching in temperatures that iced the riggers.

The wider club has had a strong summer across the board:

The junior girls’ quad reached the regional semi-finals
Two novice crews recorded their first competitive wins
Membership at the boathouse is at its highest in a decade

Club officials say the challenge now is water itself, with the low river forcing training to shift downstream to the deeper reach below the weir.

For one afternoon, though, none of that mattered. The town had a county title, and it was won on the Ackerbourne.

The Ackerbourne is running low, and the valley’s growers…

September 8, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

The Ackerbourne is lower this September than long-time residents can remember, and the growers who depend on it are already changing how they work. The gauge below Miller’s Weir has sat well under its seasonal average for eleven straight weeks.

For the watercress beds at the valley’s southern end, the shortfall is more than an inconvenience. The beds need a steady flow of clean, cool water, and several growers have reduced the area they are cropping rather than risk the whole harvest.

How growers are adapting

Smallholders up and down the valley told the Post they are trying a mix of old habits and new ones:

Watering at dusk to cut evaporation losses
Mulching heavily to hold moisture in the beds
Sharing rain butts and storage between neighbouring plots
Switching late plantings to hardier, less thirsty varieties

The concern is not this season alone. Two consecutive dry summers have growers questioning whether the valley’s traditional crops can be relied upon without more storage.

There is cautious optimism that autumn rains will restore the river before winter. But the mood among those who make their living from the Ackerbourne is that the town cannot keep treating a low river as a one-off.

Guildhall approves Corn Street pedestrian trial despite split vote

September 7, 2026September 15, 2026
by The Wrenfield Post

Wrenfield Town Council has approved a six-month trial closing the lower end of Corn Street to through traffic between 10am and 4pm, following a debate that ran past eleven o’clock and passed by a single vote.

Supporters argued the cobbled stretch below the Butter Cross has become too dangerous for the number of people crossing to the Tuesday and Saturday markets. Opponents warned that turning away vehicles will push trade toward the retail park on the Ackerbourne road.

What the trial actually changes

From the first Monday of next month, the affected stretch will operate under a new access arrangement. The council has confirmed the following:

Deliveries will be permitted before 10am and after 4pm only
Blue badge holders keep access to the three bays outside the old post office
Removable bollards, not permanent works, will mark the boundary
A count of footfall and takings will be published before any decision to extend

Market traders remain divided. Several fruit and flower stalls welcomed the change, while the ironmonger and the two butchers said their heavier customers rely on kerbside loading.

The council has promised a public review session at the halfway point. The Post will be there, and we will publish the footfall figures in full when the trial ends.
